SLEEPING DISORDERS

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

It is a dysfunction of sleep cycles. There are numerous causes of sleeplessness.

Theses causes can be related to a fragile psychological state (anxiety, stress, depression) or various substances abuse (alcohol, coffee, medicines...).

The lifestyle, working on a shift schedule or being overwhelmed with work may be significative factors as well. Furthermore, many pathologies can provoke moments of insomnia (asthma, hyperthyroidism, allergies...).

Insomnia provokes difficulty of falling asleep, multiple revivals throughout the night and a precocious wake up in the morning. We talk about chronic or severe insomnia when it has happened more than 3 times a week for more than 3 months.

LINK BETWEEN PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES & SLEEPING DISORDERS

There is a close link between physical activity and sleep.

Although all the explainatory elements are not clarified, epidemiological studies showed a positive correlation and physical exercice along with a sensation of better sleep.

It turns out to be as true for the "good sleepers" subjects as for chronic insomniac populations.

Generally, exercising promotes better sleep quality, due to the energy expenditure, hormonal stimulation and a better regulation of the wakefulness/sleep rhythm (circadian rhythm).

Exercising also permits to extend slow-wave sleep duration in which we notice a high activity of cell growth hormones.

The body temperature reduction of nearly 1°C, needed for entering the sleeping process and obtained more easily after a physical effort, permits to enter this ideal sleep phase more quickly for sportsmen, because it provides a better muscle relaxation during the night and a better rest sensation in the morning.

To conclude, sports practice, in addition to a healthy activity, would intensify the depth and quality of sleep.
